Geographic Information Systems

Geographic Information System consisting of software, hardware, as well as its applications, has been known as a tool (process) decision-making. Most large government institutions, private, academic and non academic also individuals who need information based on data spatial been familiar with and use this system.

The development was followed by a flood of GIS technology products in the markets Indonesia, the current rapid advent of technology products system of multi-disciplinary information that is already fitting was also followed also with the ability to understand the meaning systems, data and information, information systems, geographic information systems in order to keep up the speed of technological development.

Geography Information Systems or Information Geographic Systems (GIS) is an information system based computer, is designed to work by using data has a spatial information (spatial reference). This system had capture, check, integrate, manipulate, analyze, and displaying spatial data refer to earth conditions. GIS technology integrates common operations databases, such as query and statistical analysis, with the ability unique visualization and analysis that is owned by the mapping.

Ability is what distinguishes GIS with Information Systems other which makes it a useful all walks of life to explain the incident, planning strategies, and predict what happened. This system was first introduced in Indonesia in 1972 under the name Data Banks for Development (Rais, 2005). The emergence of the term Geographic Information System, as now after triggered by the General Assembly of the International Geographical Union in Ottawa Canada in 1967.

Developed by Roger Tomlinson, who then called CGIS (Canadian GIS-SIG Canada), used to store, analyze and process the data collected for Canada Land Inventory (CLI-Canadian Land Inventory) a initiative to determine the ability of land in rural areas Canada to map out a variety of information on land, agriculture, tourism, wild, birds and land use on the scale 1:250000. Since then the Geographic Information System developed in several continents, especially the American continent, Europe, Continental Australia and the Asian Continent. As in other countries, in Indonesia GIS development began in government and military. Development of GIS be supported by rapidly since the resources engaged in academic environments.
